The Human Diversity research consortium, led by the University of Turku, studies human diversity from the perspectives of language, genetics, culture and health. We are now opening three new postdoctoral researcher positions for the multidisciplinary research consortium. We are looking for postdoctoral researchers in Evolutionary Language Sciences, Archaeogenomics, and Evolutionary Health. The application period ends on 31 January 2025.
The Human Diversity research consortium is part of the “Cultural memory and social change” thematic area of University of Turku. The University’s strategy for 2021-2030 identifies six such thematic areas for research and education that promote multidisciplinary research and education between faculties, strengthen cooperation within the university, and create platforms for networks, innovations, and strategic partnerships.
The Human Diversity research consortium is run by the Department of Biology, the School of Languages and Translation Studies, the Department of Computing, and the School of History, Culture and Art Studies. Its research combines evolutionary biology, genetics, medicine and demography, archaeology, history, computational historical linguistics, mathematical modelling and computer science.
The central questions of the consortium arehow human contacts and communication networks have produced the past and current human diversity, and what it will be like in the future. The aim is to enable a transition towards a society that broadly accepts human diversity. By understanding how the past has shaped the language, culture and health of people living in the present, it is possible topredict future change from a historical perspective.
Currently, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science of the University of Turku have three postdoctoral positions open for application. The recruitments strengthen the three new tenure track professor positions recently filled at the University of Turku: Associate Professors in Archaeogenomics (Elina Salmela), Evolutionary Health (Mirkka Lahdenperä) and Evolutionary Language Sciences (Outi Vesakoski). The positions likewise strengthen the multidisciplinary research, teaching and societal interaction within our Human Diversity research consortium, funded by the Profi7 program of the Research Council of Finland.
